Mold and Pregnancy

How Does Mold Affect Pregnancy?

Pregnancy and Mold - Mold Solutions NWMore and more people are coming to the understanding that exposure to mold can cause many health issues, especially for young children, the elderly and those who already have respiratory problems.

With that in mind, the question now is will mold negatively affect your pregnancy and your unborn child?

Unfortunately, there has not been a great deal of research done on this topic. There has been animal research that has shown there are risks of birth defects if the animals have eaten moldy food, but nothing has been determined about airborne mold exposure.

Is It Coincidence?

There have been many women who, during the time of their pregnancies were exposed to mold for extended periods of time, either experienced miscarriage or had a child born with a birth defect. But science has not validated the idea that these situations were caused by or linked to mold exposure.

What we do know…

We do know how mold can affect those of us who have already been born.

  • We know that mold is a fungus and is around us all the time.
  • We know that it’s good for the outside environment, but not for us.
  • We know that it grows by sending out tiny spores into the air we breathe.
  • We know that continuous exposure to these spores can cause health problems:
    • Increased asthma attacks
    • Mold Can Cause Eye Irritations - Mold Solutions NWEye irritations
    • Allergic reactions
    • Coughing
    • Sneezing
    • Wheezing
    • Respiratory problems
  • We know that mold should be removed as soon as possible

Our Conclusion:

It may be a coincidence, but we really don’t know. Even though there is no research that proves mold exposure is harmful to your unborn child, why take chances?

Asthma and Mold

Can Asthma be Linked to Mold?

Image of Mold increases risk of asthma - Mold Solutions NWAsthma is a disease that has no boundaries. It can affect the old as well as the young; affecting the lungs, it makes it difficult to breathe for millions of Americans. It is incurable, chronic and can be life threatening.

Here are some interesting statistics:

  • Asthma rates have tripled during the last 20 years, and many can be directly linked to mold exposure
  • Mold contributes to poor indoor air quality, which is the cause of 94% of all respiratory problems
  • 35% of all adult onset asthma patients can be attributed to workplace mold exposure
  • Thousands of lawsuits over mold are filed every year

Asthma in a nutshell…

Inside our lungs we have small tubes through which air passes called airways. The airways of an asthma sufferers are typically inflamed and swollen, which makes them sensitive to things and situations such as illness, weather, smoke, dust, and many other pollutants.

These “triggers” cause the airways to create extra mucus and become even more swollen making breathing extremely difficult and the person then has what is called an asthma attack.

The role of mold

This is where mold enters into the picture. As we know, mold is a fungus that is always present indoors and out. As it grows, it reproduces by growing tiny spores that are expelled and travel through the air until they find a damp, warm place to take root and begin growing and producing even more spores.

Mold Infected Airways - Mold Solutions NWThese mold spores contribute to poor air quality in our homes, businesses and other buildings. As people who suffer from asthma breathe in spore infested air, their airways become irritated and breathing becomes difficult, sometimes almost impossible.

Everyone, but especially people who have asthma, should avoid prolonged and constant contact with mold.

If you have recently developed asthma, or your symptoms seem to be increasing, you should consider the idea that you are being exposed to mold, and it’s making you sick.

Mold in My House

Could You Have Mold in Your Brand New House?

Mold on Joists - Mold Solutions NWUnfortunately, the answer to that question is yes, you could have mold in your brand new house.

Most people think they are safe from mold because their home is new, but the fact of the matter is, mold can move into your house before you do.

It can begin to grow in the lumberyard and become part of your construction.

Lumberyard Mold

Mold appears on new lumber as dark, fluffy areas and is becoming quite an issue in the construction industry as people recognize the dangers of mold to their health.

Lumberyard Mold - Mold Solutions NWTrees that have been around for a while consist of two types of wood:

  1. Sapwood – This is the first wood formed in a tree. Its job is to move and store water and nutrients which travels from the roots to the leaves.
  2. Heartwood – Named because of it’s position in the center of the tree, it is denser wood and forms after several years of growth as new sapwood forms around it. Due to the fact that the sapwood does all the work, heartwood is basically dead.

It is the sapwood that is at risk for mold growth. As the wood is harvested and milled into lumber, moisture and sugars from the sapwood become exposed and available to air-borne mold spores to take hold and begin growing.

Controlling Moisture in the Wood

Because all mold needs moisture in order to thrive, controlling the amount of moisture in the wood is the key to controlling mold, which is why it’s important to keep the lumber as dry as possible.

Mold on New Construction - Mold Solutions NWIf you are in the process of building a new house…

  • Communicate with your builder and request that all lumber and wood products will be inspected before leaving the lumberyard.
  • Check your construction site frequently to make sure that the wood is stored off the ground and protected from moisture.
  • Make sure your new construction is checked for mold.

Dangerous Mold

How Dangerous is Breathing Mold

Mold Decays Leaves - Mold Solutions NWFall is fast approaching, which means leaves are falling and decaying, and people are having allergy and asthma attacks.

The decay is caused by mold doing it’s job, feeding off the organic plant matter and turning it into organic compost.

When this natural cycle occurs outside people with allergies can become very uncomfortable, but when mold is growing and feeding off the organic materials in your house, it is not only uncomfortable, but can become dangerous.

About Mold:

Mold is not like typical plants that produce their food by means of photosynthesis, mold is a fungus that must find its food to survive, and it will find it in dark, moist, warm places…that’s where fallen leaves, over ripe fruit and your water damaged wallboard comes in.

As mold finds its food source, the process of decay and destruction begins.

How Mold Grows

Your home can be the perfect environment for mold to grow, like you it likes nice warm places with moist air. And like you, it will thrive when conditions are just right.

As mold grows, it spreads by sending out tiny seed like spores that travel through the air looking for the same conditions. This process happens rapidly, in fact if you have had water damage and haven’t thoroughly dried out everything that got wet, mold will begin in about 24 hours.

Some molds produce mycotoxins, which are dangerous to human beings, and are all but impossible to destroy. If we have mold in our homes, when we breath the air, we are also breathing in the mold spores and possibly dangerous mycotoxins.

Mold Smell

Are You Smelling Mold?

Do you smell mold? - Mold Solutions NWWhat is that foul, musty smell that you notice whenever you enter the house or pass by a certain area? It actually could be caused by a number of things, but more than likely you’re smelling mold.

Sometimes mold is easy to find; you can see it around windows, in the shower, and even growing on your walls. But all too often, mold is growing in places that you won’t easily find.

So don’t think that because you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist, if you smell mold, it’s there somewhere, and it would be wise to have it located and remediated.

Where can mold be hiding?

Mold can hide in various places:

  • One lady complained of a musty smell in her carpet near an outside wall. Because the house was built on a concrete slab rather than having a crawl space, they came to the conclusion that it couldn’t be mold. But if you have foundation problems, such as cracks that allow moisture to creep in, you can have mold.
  • Another unseen mold problem occurred on the back side of some kitchen cabinets that had been exposed to too much moisture.
  • Mold can be found behind wallpaper, behind wall paneling and under carpets and other flooring.
  • It can be found in crawl spaces, attics and in the backs of closets.
  • You can find mold on the bottom sides of drawers that are in kitchens and bathrooms where dampness, spills and leaks occur on a regular basis.
  • Mold can be sandwiched between the sub-floor and floor and concealed in wall cavities.
