What Happens When Mold Spores Enter the Body?

Black Mold in the Body

Is it really a problem if you are exposed to black mold spores?

MoldSporeExposure-MoldSolutionsNWThe answer to that is definitely yes! Mold not only grows on surfaces inside and outside of your home, but if it is inhaled, it can continue its growth inside your body.

I remember as a child being told that if I swallowed watermelon seeds, they would begin growing in my stomach. That was a pretty frightening thought…

But the idea that mold can grow inside your body is a pretty disgusting thought, but it’s a reality.

Once it begins growing there, it will produce toxins that can make you very ill, from simple things such as sneezing and watery eyes to more severe problems such as breathing disorders, vomiting and neurological disorders.

Mold Diagnosis

Mold exposure problems are very difficult to diagnose…in fact they are probably the most misdiagnosed symptoms and illnesses in the country, often confused with other illnesses, so diagnosing it correctly can be nearly impossible.

Watch this short little video which will help you understand how mold can enter your body and what it can do once it is there.

Can You Get Mold Out of Clothes?

Mold in Clothes

MoldyClothes-MoldSolutionsNWDealing with moldy clothes isn’t typically what we do, but it’s an issue for many people, and can be a sign of further problems.

Just like organic materials around your home, ie. walls, carpets, flooring or ceilings; if conditions are just right, mold can begin growing on your clothing and shoes, especially if they are made of of organic materials such as cotton or cotton blends. If there is too much moisture in your home, if clothing is left sitting while wet, (swimsuits and towels, or sweaty clothes from a workout), or if they aren’t thoroughly dried after washing, your clothing becomes a breeding place for mold spores. They just need the right conditions, (moisture, warmth and a little darkness), and within a few hours mold will begin to grow.

How do you know if your clothes are moldy? They will be discolored, black or green and will have a distinct musty smell.

Because of too much moisture…

If you find mold growing on your clothing, shoes or bags in your home, you can be pretty certain you have a moisture problem in your home. You can try to clean your clothes or throw them away, but unless you deal with the excess moisture, mold will continue to grow.

Places where mold can be a problem is in dark, damp basements, in closets and under sinks.

One young woman was constantly getting migraine headaches and couldn’t understand why. One day while looking through her bedroom closet she discovered black mold growing on the walls and floor, and it had spread to some of her clothing. After checking a little further, she discovered that her closet, which was on an outside wall of her home had a leak. Once she had the leak repaired and the mold properly removed, her headaches went away.

Can you clean mold from your clothes?

Mold is basically digesting your clothing if it has begun to grow on it, and it leaves a stain where it has been, so the longer it grows the larger the stain, the less you’ll want to use the clothing and the harder it will be to remove the stain and the smell.

If the mold hasn’t been growing too long, there are some products that will help remove it from your clothing:

  • BleachMoldyClothes-MoldSolutionsNWWashing them in a detergent that is designed to kill mold
  • Baking Soda
  • Bleach – can help lighten stains
  • Vinegar – helps remove the smell of mold
  • Borax – doesn’t emit toxic fumes

Be sure to wash the items in hot water and run through 2 complete wash cycles. A great way to make sure the mold has been killed is to line dry the clothing in the sun, where the sun’s ultraviolet rays will not only help to fade the stains, but will work to kill the mold as well.

If you have mold growing on your clothing, your home might have a mold problem, if you do…

Is Mold Dangerous? Learn the Truth

 “Mold is Dangerous”…True or False?

Mold is Dangerous - Mold Solutions NWA couple of online forums have people asking about the dangers of mold, and it’s very interesting to see all the different answers that are given.

Keep in mind, none of these answers come from professionals, but some get it right and some are really far off base. Their answers range from:

  • People tend to make too big a deal about mold – wrong answer
  • Mold is not always visible – right answer
    • Mold can be growing behind your walls in your crawl spaces or in your attic
  • Mold is not dangerous, it’s part of life – right and wrong answer
    • Mold is a natural part of life
    • It has been proven that black mold can be very dangerous to your health
  • Mold is airborne which means you can inhale it – right answer
  • You can easily clean up mold with water and bleach – wrong answer
    • Bleach is mostly just water, mold loves water…so unless it’s surface mold, bleach is not a good treatment
  • Not all molds are toxic – right answer
  • Exposure to toxic mold can cause respiratory problems, fevers, headaches and chronic fatigue – right answer
  • Molds are usually not a problem indoors – wrong answer
    • That is just the reverse of the truth; growing outdoors, mold is usually not a problem

Who do you trust?

It seems to me that if you think you have a mold problem in your home or business, forums comprised of non-professionals might not be the best place to get information.

Toxic mold can be extremely dangerous to your health…if I thought my home had mold issues, I would want to talk to someone who is trained and certified in mold detection, remediation and prevention.

What does it take for Mold to Grow in Seattle?

How Does Mold Grow in Seattle?

How Does Mold Grow - Mold Solutions NWMany people are amazed when they discover that they have mold growing in their home.

The problem is, they’re not thinking of mold in the right way…they equate it with dirty living conditions. You can have a very clean house, and still have mold. It’s not about the dirt, it’s about mold spores that colonize anywhere there is moisture, oxygen and organic material for them to feed on.

Mold spores are extremely tiny and invisible to the naked eye, but the damage they can do is not. Once mold gets started, it doesn’t take long to take hold and begin the damage.

Damage from mold

If you’re wondering what type of damage mold can cause in your home, ask the victims of Hurricane Katrina and most recently Hurricane Sandy.

The news talks about power outages, shortages of gas, no food, no water, injury and evacuations. What you don’t always hear about is the destructive force of mold.

Once any type of water damage occurs, you only have 24-48 hours before mold begins to grow. If you can repair and stop the damage right away, you probably don’t need to worry. But in natural disasters where homes are evacuated and flooded, it’s unlikely that homeowners will not be able to return soon enough to stop the damage.

For homes (or any other buildings) that were left standing in water after the storms, mold will be their largest enemy. By the time people were able to re-enter their homes after Katrina, mold was growing everywhere and the homes were beyond repair.

But it doesn’t take a hurricane for mold to begin growing, it only takes a leaky pipe, too much condensation or lack of good ventilation.

Tell tale signs of mold

Water Damaged Home - Mold Solutions NWIf your home, office or school has experience any type of water damage, be on the look out for signs such as these:

  • Musty smell
  • Discolored walls or ceilings

Mold doesn’t go away on its own…if your home has had water damage that has encouraged mold growth, don’t try to deal with it yourself, you could actually make matters worse – call trained mold inspectors and remediators. They know how to solve your mold issues safely and without spreading the spores so they can start again.

Can Mold Cause Breathing Difficulty in Seattle?

What Could Cause Your Breathing Difficulty?

Difficulty Breathing - Mold Solutions NWRespiratory problems, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing can be caused by any number of things, it could be caused by:

  • Something as simple as a cold
  • Asthma
  • Sinusitis
  • Viruses
  • Emphysema
  • Bronchitis
  • Lung Cancer
  • Tuberculosis
  • Pneumonia
  • Allergies

When the problem is allergies, the symptoms could be caused by pollens, dust or mold. When mold is the culprit, it can increase the intensity and frequency of all of the illnesses or conditions listed above.

Real life example

This is a communication between a client and me in regard to a respiratory problem from a tenant.

Thank you for having me out to your client’s home to figure out what might be causing some of their respiratory issues.

I am not a medical professional, but in the course of my mold investigation I did notice that the level of humidity in their apartment is on the high side, possibly creating an environment conducive to organic growth.

There was some evidence of organic growth under their mattress, but nowhere else was anything visible. There are some other factors too that might be contributing and I have listed them out and thoughts on ways to keep these things in check in the attachment.

I believe that if the tenants give some consideration to the ideas in that attachment as well as you possibly providing them with a dehumidifier to keep moisture content of air down, (between 40 and 50% is what we want to see, higher than that creates conditions for mold growth). There may be some dust issues there as well, which can create allergic reactions for folks and is easily rectified.

Don’t underestimate mold and dust

Mold Free Happy Home - Mold Solutions NWBoth mold and dust can be very detrimental to your ability to breathe…luckily the couple in our story didn’t have a big issue in their home, it was one that could be easily rectified.

Mold Solutions NW’s goal is to help you breathe easier with a complete and thorough inspection. Our client from the above story wrote a great review on Google + that you might enjoy reading.
